ugh...frustrated

Tue Apr 28, 2009, 8:54 PM
I am completely totally unsatisfied with where I am at, art wise. I want to make pretty things, and everything always ends up looking the same.

sigh.

What do you do to get yourself to the next level, artistically?

I think just observing is a powerful tool. Take a break and just look. At everything. The curvature of things in nature. Other people's artwork. Even do a tester piece from something completely different than what you'd normally do.

:smooch: Good luck <3

I think AunJuli pretty much said it there.

Taking a break is great, and for me at least, making myself use references helps me expand my understanding of how things look/act/are, and I usually find my ideas and confidence in my ability to create different things expand. And in my experience, fixating on one thing you want to improve at a time (like noses, hands, hair) seems to help bring out more ideas and new styles without being overwhelming.

And I'm sorry if I didn't make sense or totally missed your point. I'm a wee bit sleeeepy. ha..

try something completely new that interests you. But I agree with the others about the looking thing. See how other people do it, find out the mechanics of their art and apply what you learn. Look at all the amazing tutorials we have on DA and just give some of them a go.

My art teacher would always yell out "It's about process people! Not product. Speed painting, Speed Drawing, detailed painting, realistic drawing! It's about understanding your art, about yourself as an artist..."

He was kinda crazy too.

First: don't force it. I'm always unsatisfied with my art when I'm trying to force it. Relax and draw something you really want to draw. Art has to be fun. Try to draw something you really enjoy. ;)

I'm not an artist so I can't offer you artistic help, but I want you to know that your art is magical, beautiful and unique. I'm being perfectly honest. I always look forward to your art. I hope to see more soon.

I agree with ArtisticAunJuli. I look at other's work for hours and when I actually draw, its 10X better than what I expected. Also, experiment! Take a break from digital art if they's what you want. Draw something that's intricate and focus on detail.
Hope my advice helps

So...what's my next fandom? BLEACH OF COURSE! xD

do exactly what you are doing- keep pushing the envelope and try out different styles. i hate the growing process of art- but when you are out of all the growing pains, you definitely know it. its like "wow, i just improved a little bit. didnt think i would get out of it THIS time"

keep up the great work! you will reach your "next" level in no time!!
